kakarakaya bellam kura (Bitter gourd in sweet and sour sauce)

This is one of Andhra delicacy. My in-laws are visiting us,so i have been taking down recipes from her.  This has simple ingredients  that creates a magical taste. Adding a dash of sesame seeds powder gives great flavor .




Ingredients :

medium Bitter gourd - 4 or 5
onions - finely chopped 1/2 cup


Tamarind paste - 3 tsp  (if using store bought use 1tsp ,but store bought one will not give good color )
jaggery - grated .

sesame seeds - 3 tsp

for seasoning:
Mustered seeds - 1tsp
Cumin seeds - 1tsp
Green chilles - 2or 3
urad dal -1 tsp
chana dal-2tsp
hing a pinch
turmeric -1/4 tsp
How to proceed :



Prepare Bitter gourd :chop bitter gourd pieces to thin rounds and boil in in water .add salt and pinch of turmeric. Once they are tender,drain water and keep it a side.

roast sesame seeds and grind it to a powder and keep it aside.


heat oil in a skillet and add the seasoning ingredients except hing
when they start spluttering add hing &turmeric
now add green chillies ,onions fry for 1 or 2 mins


 add boiled bitter gourd pieces
add tamarind paste and jaggery , 1 tsp of  red chill powder and salt.

add 1/2 cup water .
cook on medium flame covered with lid for 5 mins.

now add sesame seeds powder and cook for 2 mins.

garnish and serve with rice.
