Raw Mango Dal (Mamidikaya pappu)

Mango dal or mamadikaya pappu one of our family's favorite dish. I like anything prepared with raw mango. mango dal ,mango tokku ,mango rice or mango rasam.... ok list goes on..oh i miss those different varieties of mangos here...  .I remember when we are in BHEL ,our neighbors had a big mango tree right next to our compound wall. With so many mangoes available ,mango used to be in every dish in this season.
This is recipe is simple with fewer number of ingredients







ingredients:
1 small cup tuvar dal/red gram dal/kandi pappu
1 cup peeled and chopped raw mango pieces

big pinch turmeric pwd
2-3 green chillis, slit lengthwise
salt to taste
1/2 cup water


For seasoning
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
2 dry red chillis, 
handful of fresh curry leaves

2-3 tsps oil
pinch Asafoetida







cook Dal in a pressure cooker till soft.

in a large pan add mango pieces, green chillis,water ,salt. bring to boil.
add turmeric powder.

once mango pieces are tender and soft add cooked dal and stir , water if required.

cover and cook on low flame for few mins.

Heat oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds ,cumin seeds, red chillis ,when they start to splutter add curry leaves ,Asafoetida


Add this to the prepared dal ,garnish with cilantro.

this goes very well with rice or chapathi or even as a spread on bread.


optional:   you can add red chilli powder along with salt.
